Review: As a fan of 7 1/2 Deaths, I was really looking forward to this novel. I was looking for a historical mystery that was atmospheric to get me through a snow and cold spell and thought I had found it with a story set on a 17c trading ship. Imagine the creaking of the wood, the sense of claustrophobia, the mass-dread of a supposedly supernatural malevolence aboard a ship in the middle of the ocean. Good times! There is no atmosphere. There's barely a historical ship. The author, in the afterward, even asks us to forgive him for not really using the ship as he isn't interested in historical ships. The ship could have so easily been a character of its own in hands that cared. What a lost opportunity.Others have called the mystery "Scooby Doo" and as much as I wish they were wrong, it really is. The only thing worse than a mystery where you figure out whodunnit too early is the novel where the baddies come out of nowhere. Not only do the baddies come from the least expected place, but when the mastermind reveals themselves, you almost miss it entirely because it seems like it's part of the masterplan to save everyone.Their plot is too complicated, involves way too many co-conspirators, exorbitant amounts of money, and finite details to be in the least bit believable. ALL this - 7 ships, high-placed officials, documents, treasure, and 15 years to kill one man? Especially since poisons were available the whole time.Others have outlined all the plotholes and bad history. It's appalling.I nearly threw the book away after the reveal of the true antagonists but I plunged on, irritated, to the very end. It was only 20 or so more pages, so why not?!The ending was enraging as paragons for good joined forces with mass murderers in the name of friendship since the bad guys promised to use their lust for death for good, rather than evil. They turned Dexter and everyone hugged it out. Two days later and I'm still angry.I cannot recommend this novel on any level. I won't even make a friend read just to share the horrible experience with me as I usually do. It's not worth the trudge to get there.
